:: The Castle

Four centuries of harmonious architectural styles are present in the castle of Miromesnil. Decorated with pilasters, masks, crowns of flowers or urns made of stone, the north façade is a rare example of the style Louis XIII monumental. Two wings were built during the XIXth century in the same architectural spirit.

The imposing structure of this facade contrasts with the simplicity of the south façade with its pure lines and the warm colour of the brick.
The castle's salons are decorated with sumptuous bouquets of flowers from the kitchen garden. In these rooms are exposed souvenirs of the marquis de Miromesnil, chief justice of Louis XVI, of Guy de Maupassant (who was born in the castle on the 5 august 1850), and Albert de Mun, a political personality linked to the actual owner's family.

Guy de Maupassant
born in Miromesnil in 1850, died in Paris in 1893.
In spite of the legend, documents attest that Maupassant's parents rented the castle a year before the writer's birth.

At age three, the little Guy has quit Miromesil with its parents for another castle in Grainville-Ymauville in the same region.

After his lessons with Gustave Flaubert, he will become one of our greatest authors.
You have to read the first chapter of "Pierre et Jean", to understand how his artist's personality was created.
He has traduced the atmosphere in which his take place with a lot of simplicity and sensibility.
The first years of his life in Miromesnil, had an impact of his books, since the region was a source for its writings.

:: The park and the kitchen garden

The park is dominated by a cedar of Lebanon, several centuries old. The park of the castle is circled with a wall of bricks recently restored. In the park you can find some fruit trees, magnolias, and huge collection of clematises.
Against the castle, the kitchen garden (restored forty years ago by the comtesse de Vogüé, grand-mother of the actual owners), stayed in its initial vocation of a " pleasure " garden. Separated by alleys made of grass, the squares are ordered with vegetables and flowers that contrasts with the profusion of annual flowers on the sides: a fantastic harmony of delicate colours that vary according to the season.

:: The Grove and the Chapel

The park and the castle are circled with a beech grove. According to a plan that dates of eighteenth century, impressive perspectives are opening on the campaign. In this grove we can find a chapel called Saint Antoine, unique vestige of a fortress destroyed during the battle of Arques (1589). Under the austere exterior aspects is hiding the luxe of an interior decoration.
